EMC (Electro Magnetic Compatibility)

Electromagnetic Waves and Life

Electromagnetic waves are very closely related to our lives.
We have products(e.g. cell phone, TV, microwave oven) that intentionally
use electromagnetic waves and others(e.g. transmission line, electronic device)
that come with unintentional electromagnetic waves.

Intentional Noise

Devices that intentionally create RF energy during operation
for product performance & functions

Unintentional Noise

Devices that come with unintentional RF energy during operation
for product performance & functions

What is EMC (Electro Magnetic Compatibility)?

The capabilities of devices, equipment or systems that are not obstructed
with unnecessary electromagnetic waves and work properly in
such electromagnetic environment
EMC standards regulate if a device has the ability to minimize
interference affecting other devices by minimizing electromagnetic
waves generated during operation of the device (EMI) and  the ability
to withstand and not be affected by various external electromagnetic waves (EMS).

※ RE (Radiated Emission) : unwanted electromagnetic waves & noise
                            propagating through air
CE (Conducted Emission) : unwanted electromagnetic waves & noise
propagating through conductors such as power cable
RS (Radiated Susceptibility) : the level that product performance is
not affected from noise propagating through air
CS (Conducted Susceptibility) : the level that product performance is not affected
                                   from noise propagating through conductors

The Purpose of EMC Regulations

EMI : to prevent a device from interfering with other devices through
space/data cable/power cable and from negatively affecting
      broadcasting & telecommunication
EMS : to prevent malfunction of devices by evaluating the ability
to withstand from external electromagnetic waves coming from
      nature or nearby devices
